Embarking on a journey to the Berlin Wall's iconic East Side Gallery, I was a bit unsure of what we were about to experience. Having already explored the captivating, sometimes unsettling historical landmarks that define Berlin's identity, my expectations were kind of set. However, little did I know how affected I would be by the remarkable quality of the artworks and the profound symbolism they held. Raindrops and gale-force winds of apocalyptic proportions descended upon us that day, umbrellas weren't an option, so heavy rain jackets it was - I wasn't going to miss out.
The Berlin Wall, once a formidable barrier dividing East and West Germany during the Cold War, stands as a poignant reminder of a bygone era. Stretching for 1.3 kilometres, the East Side Gallery showcases a collection of over 100 paintings, transforming a once stark symbol of separation into an open-air gallery that celebrates unity, freedom and the triumph of the human spirit. Although primarily associated with the Cold War, the Berlin Wall Memorial reminds visitors of the division of Germany and Berlin that emerged in the aftermath of World War II. It serves as a somber reminder of the political and ideological struggles that shaped the city and its people.

I can definitely say that visiting the East Side Gallery at the Berlin Wall was one of the most transformative experiences I've ever had and totally exceeded my expectations. As I stood before many of the striking artworks, their vibrant colours and profound messages resonated deeply within me. And watching the bus loads of people (also battling the tumultuous elements) it became evident how powerfully immersive the site is.
This permanent exhibition stands as a testament to the power of art to heal wounds, bridge divides, and inspire hope - a living testament to the indomitable human spirit. If you are a creative visiting Berlin, this is a must have stop on your itinerary.
